Trinity has two flagship spoken-English certifications. They are graded very differently and target different skills. Here is how to pick.
Trinity College London is the second-largest UK exam board (after Cambridge) and — unusually — their spoken English exams are conducted by real UK examiners in a real one-to-one conversation. For serious spoken-English learners in India, Trinity certifications carry weight.
The two flagship products are GESE and ISE. Parents often ask which to take. Here is the honest breakdown after preparing candidates for years.
GESE — Graded Examinations in Spoken English
GESE tests speaking and listening only. It runs at 12 grades (Initial to Grade 12), roughly mapping to CEFR A1 through C2. It is a face-to-face conversation with a Trinity examiner covering a discussion topic and — from Grade 3 upwards — a set of "topic areas" the candidate has prepared.
Format: 1-to-1 oral only. No paper, no writing. • Duration: 5–25 minutes depending on grade. • Best for: children whose spoken English is strong but whose written English is still developing. • Best age: from around Grade 3 (age 8) onwards.
ISE — Integrated Skills in English
ISE tests all four skills — reading, writing, speaking and listening. There are five levels (Foundation, I, II, III, IV). Reading and writing are done in one module, speaking and listening in another.
Format: written module + oral module. Both required. • Duration: varies by level, typically 2 hours in total. • Best for: students whose reading and writing are already at level. Typically Grade 6+. • Recognised by: many UK universities for undergraduate admissions.
Which should your child take?
For most children in Pune the right sequence is:
Start with an appropriate GESE grade. This builds confidence and produces a real certificate quickly. • Once spoken English is strong (usually 1–2 GESE grades cleared), move to ISE Foundation or ISE I. • Only progress to ISE II / III when both written and oral English match. Rushing ISE is the most common reason for a fail-fair result.
Note: A Trinity grade is a real certificate — not a participation trophy. Every year we counsel a small number of families to wait 3–6 months rather than take an exam the child is not ready for. The paperwork is not free and the certificate is real.
How preparation works at SpeakingMinds
Trinity preparation runs alongside our regular spoken English and public speaking classes. Once a student and their parents decide on a target grade, we align classes to that syllabus — topic list rehearsal, mock orals, and (for ISE) additional written practice. Latika ma'am is Trinity-trained and personally reviews every candidate before we approve them for an exam registration.
Fees and registration
SpeakingMinds class fees are ₹1,500 per month. Trinity exam fees are paid separately to Trinity College London and vary by grade — we share the current fee schedule at enrolment.
